'Chicago P.D.' star Jesse Lee Soffer reveals why he left series: 'One of the toughest decisions'

Jesse Lee Soffer, one of the stars of the hit police procedural drama "Chicago P.D.," recently announced his departure from the show after seven seasons. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Soffer revealed that the decision to leave was not an easy one.

"It was one of the toughest decisions I've had to make," Soffer said. "It's been an incredible ride, and I'm so grateful for the experience."

Soffer played Detective Jay Halstead on the show, a character he had portrayed since the series' inception in 2014. The actor said that he had been contemplating his future on the show for some time, and ultimately decided that it was time for him to move on and explore other opportunities.

"It was just time for me to do something different," Soffer said. "I love the character, and I love the show, but I've been playing him for seven years, and I'm ready for a new challenge."

Soffer's departure from the show comes at a time of significant change for the "Chicago" franchise. Last year, "Chicago Med" star Torrey DeVitto and "Chicago Fire" star Kara Killmer both announced that they would be leaving their respective shows, while "Chicago Justice" was canceled after just one season.

Despite the changes, Soffer expressed confidence in the future of the "Chicago P.D." and the franchise as a whole.

"I think the show has a lot of life left in it," he said. "It's an amazing cast and crew, and I know they're going to continue to do great things."

Soffer did not reveal what his future plans were, but he did hint that he was interested in exploring other genres and types of roles.

"I'm excited to see what's next," he said. "I want to try different things and challenge myself as an actor."

Soffer's final episode of "Chicago P.D." aired on February 10th, and the show is set to continue without him. The series, which follows the detectives of the Chicago Police Department's Intelligence Unit as they solve crimes and deal with the city's most dangerous criminals, remains a popular and critically acclaimed show, with a dedicated fan base and strong ratings.

Fans of Soffer and "Chicago P.D." will undoubtedly miss his presence on the show, but the actor's departure marks the beginning of a new chapter for both him and the franchise.
