FBI finds Washington boy in Missouri 7 months after disappearance; grandparents face charges

The FBI has located a 9-year-old boy from Washington state who went missing last year, and his grandparents now face charges related to his disappearance.

The boy, identified only as "John Doe" in court documents, was reported missing by his father in August 2021. At the time, the boy was living with his grandparents, Charles and Jennifer Fox, in Omak, Washington. The Foxes were the boy's legal guardians and had been granted custody in 2019.

The FBI was called in to assist with the search, and investigators discovered that the Foxes had taken the boy and left the state in a recreational vehicle (RV). The FBI issued an alert for the boy and the RV, but they were not located until February 2022, when they were found in Missouri.

The Foxes were taken into custody and charged with custodial interference, which is a felony. They are currently being held in Missouri, and it is not clear when they will be extradited to Washington to face charges.

According to court documents, the Foxes took the boy without his father's permission and refused to tell him where they were. The boy was not enrolled in school and was not receiving medical care while he was missing.

The FBI has not released any details about how they located the boy and the Foxes, but they did say that the boy is now safe and in the care of child protective services.

This case highlights the issue of custodial interference, which occurs when one parent or legal guardian takes a child without the permission of the other parent or guardian. In some cases, custodial interference can be part of a larger pattern of abuse or control.

If you suspect that a child is the victim of custodial interference or other forms of abuse or neglect, it is important to report your concerns to the appropriate authorities. Child protective services, law enforcement, and other organizations can help ensure the safety and well-being of children who may be at risk.
