Girl abducted at Washington mall in 2018 found safe in Mexico, FBI says

A girl who was abducted from a shopping mall in Washington State in 2018 has been found safe in Mexico, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The girl, Sofia Juarez, was just four years old when she was taken from a mall in Kennewick on the night of February 4, 2018.

The case gained national attention, with the FBI offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to Sofia's recovery. Despite extensive searches and appeals for information, there were no credible leads until recently.

On Friday, March 12, the FBI announced that Sofia had been found safe and in good health in Mexico. They did not provide details on how she was located or who was responsible for her abduction.

The news of Sofia's recovery was met with relief and joy by her family and the community. Her aunt, Maria Medina, told reporters that the family was "overwhelmed with emotions" and grateful for everyone who had supported them over the past three years.

"We never gave up hope that we would find her," Medina said. "We are so grateful to the FBI and the Mexican authorities for bringing Sofia home."

The FBI said that Sofia's case is a reminder of the importance of never giving up hope in missing person cases. "We are thrilled that Sofia is safe and back with her family," said Special Agent in Charge Renn Cannon of the FBI's Seattle Field Office. "This case serves as a reminder to the public and law enforcement to never give up on finding missing children, and to always report any information about missing children to the FBI and law enforcement partners."

The FBI did not provide any information on whether anyone has been arrested or charged in connection with Sofia's abduction. The case is still under investigation.

Sofia's recovery comes just weeks after another high-profile missing person case was solved. On February 11, 2021, the remains of 33-year-old Maya Millete were found in a remote area of San Diego County, California. Millete had been missing since January 7, 2021, and her case had garnered national attention. No one has been arrested or charged in connection with her death.

The recoveries of Sofia Juarez and Maya Millete highlight the importance of continued efforts to locate missing persons and bring closure to their families.
