Jesse Spencer explains Matt Casey's 'Chicago Fire' return, why his ex was shocked: 'Rough call'

Jesse Spencer, who plays firefighter Matt Casey on the hit NBC drama "Chicago Fire," recently spoke about his character's unexpected return to the show in a new interview. The actor revealed that he was surprised by the storyline, which involved Casey coming back to the firehouse after being away for several months.

Spencer explained that he had thought Casey's absence would be more permanent, given that the character had left to take care of his sick mother in California. However, the show's writers had different plans for Casey, and they approached Spencer with the idea of bringing him back to Chicago.

The actor said that he initially had some reservations about the storyline, as he felt that it might be difficult to explain Casey's sudden return. However, he ultimately agreed to the idea, and he was impressed by the way that the writers handled the situation.

"I thought it was a really rough call, because he's supposed to be taking care of his mom," Spencer said in the interview. "But I thought the way they did it was really great, because he's coming back to the firehouse for a good reason."

Spencer also revealed that his character's ex-girlfriend, paramedic Sylvie Brett (played by Kara Killmer), was shocked by Casey's return. The two characters had been in a relationship before Casey left, and Brett had been struggling to move on from the breakup.

"I think it's a bit of a shock for her, because she's not sure what it means," Spencer said. "She's trying to figure out if it's just for work, or if he's coming back for her."

The actor teased that there would be some interesting developments between Casey and Brett in the upcoming episodes, as the two characters navigate their complicated relationship.

Spencer also spoke about the challenges of playing a firefighter on "Chicago Fire," noting that the job is physically demanding and requires a lot of preparation.

"It's tough, because it's very physical," he said. "We have to do a lot of training and a lot of prep work. But it's also very rewarding, because we get to do something that's so important and meaningful."

Overall, Spencer seemed excited about Casey's return to "Chicago Fire," and he expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to play the character.

"I feel really lucky to be a part of this show," he said. "It's been an amazing experience, and I'm excited to see where Casey's story goes next."
