Tom Cruise skips Oscars, but Lady Gaga will perform 'Top Gun: Maverick' song

Tom Cruise, the star of the upcoming film "Top Gun: Maverick," was noticeably absent from the 93rd Academy Awards ceremony on Sunday. However, it was announced that Lady Gaga will perform the film's theme song, "The Need for Speed," during the broadcast.

Cruise, who is known for performing his own stunts in action films, has been promoting "Top Gun: Maverick" in recent months. The film, which is a sequel to the 1986 hit "Top Gun," was originally scheduled to be released in 2020 but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It is now set to be released in theaters on July 2, 2021.

Despite Cruise's absence, "Top Gun: Maverick" was still a topic of conversation at the Oscars. A trailer for the film aired during the broadcast, featuring footage of Cruise flying fighter jets and performing other daring stunts.

Meanwhile, Lady Gaga's performance of "The Need for Speed" was one of several musical performances featured during the Oscars. The ceremony also featured performances by H.E.R., Celeste, and Leslie Odom Jr., among others.

The 93rd Academy Awards were held in a scaled-down ceremony due to COVID-19 concerns, with most of the nominees and presenters attending remotely. The ceremony was held at both the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles and Union Station in downtown Los Angeles.

This year's Oscars were also notable for their increased diversity, with a number of historic firsts. Chloé Zhao became the first woman of color and the second woman ever to win Best Director, while Yuh-Jung Youn became the first Korean actor to win an acting award.

In addition, "Nomadland" won Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress, among other awards. The film, which follows a woman who becomes a modern-day nomad after losing everything in the Great Recession, has been praised for its poignant portrayal of the struggles faced by many Americans in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis.

Overall, the 93rd Academy Awards were a unique and memorable event, reflecting the challenges and triumphs of the past year in the film industry and beyond.
