Tulane president: ChatGPT has issues. Colleges should still embrace it.

Tulane University President Michael Fitts recently wrote an op-ed for Inside Higher Ed, in which he discussed the benefits and challenges of using chatbots and other artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in higher education.

Fitts acknowledged that chatbots, such as the AI-powered ChatGPT, have some limitations and can sometimes provide inaccurate or incomplete information to students. However, he also argued that these technologies have enormous potential to improve the student experience and enhance learning outcomes.

"Despite their limitations, chatbots can still play a critical role in higher education, particularly as institutions adapt to the new realities of remote learning and increased student demand for digital services," Fitts wrote.

He went on to highlight some of the ways in which chatbots can be used in higher education, such as providing personalized support to students, answering common questions about admissions and financial aid, and even helping to identify students who may be at risk of dropping out.

Fitts also stressed the importance of ensuring that chatbots and other AI technologies are used ethically and in a way that prioritizes the needs of students.

"Colleges and universities must be thoughtful and strategic in how they use chatbots and other AI technologies," he wrote. "This means not only addressing the technical issues that can arise, but also ensuring that these tools are deployed in a way that respects student privacy, promotes diversity and inclusion, and serves the best interests of all learners."

Overall, Fitts emphasized the need for colleges and universities to embrace new technologies like chatbots, while also recognizing their limitations and potential challenges. He called for a collaborative and innovative approach to using AI in higher education, one that is grounded in a deep understanding of students' needs and experiences.

"As we look to the future of higher education, there is no doubt that chatbots and other AI technologies will continue to play an increasingly important role," Fitts concluded. "By embracing these tools and using them wisely, we can create a more inclusive, accessible, and effective learning environment for all students."
