White House: China should include Ukraine president Zelenskyy in war talks with Russia, Putin

The White House has urged China to include Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in any talks with Russia's President Vladimir Putin about the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The statement comes as Ukraine continues to face escalating tensions with Russian-backed separatists in the eastern Donbass region.

In a press briefing, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said, "We have consistently said that President Zelenskyy should be included in any conversation that is held about the future of Ukraine, and certainly that would apply to any engagement with President Putin and Russia."

China has previously expressed interest in playing a role in resolving the conflict in Ukraine, and has offered to host talks between Ukraine and Russia. However, it is unclear whether China would be willing to involve Zelenskyy in any such talks.

The conflict in Ukraine began in 2014, when pro-Russian separatists seized control of the Crimea region and parts of eastern Ukraine. Since then, more than 13,000 people have been killed in the conflict, and Ukraine has accused Russia of providing military support to the separatists.

The United States and European Union have imposed sanctions on Russia over its role in the conflict, and have provided military and economic support to Ukraine. The conflict has also strained relations between Russia and the West.

The call for China to involve Zelenskyy in any talks with Putin comes amid renewed fighting in eastern Ukraine. In recent weeks, there has been a significant increase in ceasefire violations, and Ukrainian officials have reported the deaths of several soldiers in clashes with separatists.

Zelenskyy has called for more support from the West in dealing with the conflict, and has expressed concern about the possibility of a full-scale invasion by Russia. In a recent interview with CNN, he said, "I believe that the West should support Ukraine. Not only financially, not only with declarations, but with real action."

The conflict in Ukraine is likely to be a key topic of discussion at an upcoming meeting between President Biden and Russian President Putin. The two leaders are expected to meet in the coming months, though a date and location have not yet been announced.

In addition to Ukraine, the meeting is expected to cover a range of other issues, including arms control, cyber security, and human rights. The Biden administration has said that it will take a tough stance on Russia, and has already imposed sanctions in response to alleged interference in the 2020 US election and the poisoning of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny.

As tensions between Russia and the West continue to rise, the conflict in Ukraine is likely to remain a major source of concern for the international community. The call for China to involve Zelenskyy in any talks with Putin is a reflection of the growing importance of China in global affairs, and the need for a coordinated approach to resolving conflicts
